Frequently Asked Questions

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) is a mandatory set of courses that professional mariners must complete to comply with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). It ensures that seafarers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to handle emergencies at sea safely and effectively.

The training covers four core modules:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST): Teaches survival skills in emergency situations at sea.
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FP&FF): Prepares mariners to prevent and respond to onboard fires.
  • Elementary First Aid (EFA): Provides basic first aid skills needed at sea.
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR): Focuses on social responsibilities and personal safety on board.

The STCW 78 Convention, as amended, including the 2010 Manila amendments, ensures that these courses meet modern international safety standards for seafarers on yachts, ships, and other commercial vessels. This training is required to work legally in the maritime industry and helps mariners stay well-prepared for a variety of emergencies.

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) is mandatory for all crew members working on commercial vessels, yachts, and cruise liners, regardless of their specific role. This applies to both entry-level crew and experienced mariners.

The training is required for anyone seeking employment at sea, including individuals working on:

  • Cargo ships and tankers
  • Cruise ships and yachts
  • Offshore support vessels
  • Passenger vessels

Completing the STCW BST ensures that every crew member has the essential safety skills to handle emergencies and contribute to a safe working environment on board. This requirement aligns with international maritime safety regulations outlined by the STCW Convention.

The STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) consists of four mandatory modules:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST): Teaches survival skills and procedures for emergencies at sea, including the use of life-saving equipment.
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FP&FF): Provides knowledge on preventing fires and responding effectively in firefighting scenarios on board.
  • Elementary First Aid (EFA): Covers the basics of first aid, including how to provide care in medical emergencies at sea.
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR): Focuses on safety practices, social responsibility, and maintaining personal well-being on board vessels.

Additionally, there is an optional half-day course:

  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA): This course teaches security awareness for all crew members, especially for those working on vessels that comply with the ISPS Code.

These modules ensure that all participants meet international safety standards set by the STCW Convention and are well-prepared to handle emergencies and routine operations on board vessels.

In the U.A.E., all STCW BST modules expire after five years, and mariners are required to retake the full course to maintain compliance with local maritime regulations.

This ensures that seafarers remain proficient in essential safety skills.

However, other maritime authorities may issue Certificates of Proficiency (COPs) with "unlimited" validity for certain modules, such as Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) and Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA). These modules may not require periodic refreshment unless local regulations state otherwise.

We highly recommend checking with the relevant flag state or local authorities to confirm which modules need to be refreshed to remain compliant, as requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Yes, you can take the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course even without prior maritime experience.
