Course Overview

One-day STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Refresher / Updating Training Course Module, instructed in compliance with STCW Code A-VI/1-1.

Seafarers who hold a valid STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) certificate are required to complete this refresher course every five years to demonstrate continued proficiency, as mandated by the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments (STCW Section A-VI/1 | Table A-VI/1-1).

You need the STCW Refresher PST course and certification

  • If you hold an expired or soon expiring STCW Basic Safety Training certificate.
  • If you hold an expired or soon expiring STCW PST certificate.
  • If you hold an expired or soon expiring STCW PST Updating / Refresher COP

Important Notice:

Due to local regulations set by the Federal Maritime Authority (FMA) of the U.A.E., the STCW PST Refresher training is delivered as a full one-day STCW PST module

Instead of receiving a refresher certificate, candidates will be issued a new STCW BST PST Certificate of Proficiency for the full course, as there is no separate refresher option in the U.A.E.

This course consists of a 4 hours course in the classroom covering subjects such as: 

  • Emergency situations
  • Evacuation
  • Survival craft and rescue boats
  • Personal lifesaving appliances
  • Survival at sea
  • Emergency radio equipment
  • Helicopter assistance.
  • The theory part is followed by a written exam.

The second part of the course (4 hours) is spent in the swimming pool performing the simulation of abandon ship procedures, a few learning objectives are listed below: 

  • Use of life jacket and immersion suit
  • Jump from a height into the water
  • Swim wearing a life jacket
  • Board a life raft and right an inverted life raft
  • The practical exercises are subject to ongoing assessment by the instructor.

  • Access to safety equipment (life jackets, immersion suits, life-raft etc.) for practical exercises

Entry Requirements: 

  • Physical Fitness: 
    Candidates must be capable of participating in rigorous physical activity during the practical sessions.
  • Medical or Health Declaration: 
    A valid medical certificate or health declaration is required to confirm fitness for the physically demanding nature of the course.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: 
    Candidates must be at least 16 years old to enroll.
  • ID or Passport: 
    A valid form of identification (ID or passport) is required for registration and certification.
  • Basic Swimming Ability (recommended): 
    While not mandatory, basic swimming skills are recommended for the Personal Survival Techniques (PST) module. 
    Non-swimmers may still participate but must complete all practical exercises while wearing a lifejacket.
  • Expired STCW BST Certificate of Proficiency (COP):
    While your expiring or expired STCW BST COP is helpful, it is not mandatory for this course. Since this is the full STCW BST PST module, there is no need to verify your prior certificate.

    Upon successful completion, we issue both a hard copy and a digital copy of the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) Certificates of Proficiency.
  • MOEI/FMA Accreditation:
    Our training institute is fully accredited by the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure (MOEI) and the Federal Maritime Authority (FMA) of the U.A.E., ensuring compliance with the highest maritime training standards.
  • Compliance with STCW 78 as amended (including 2010 amendments):
    Our courses adhere to the latest amendments of the STCW 78 Convention, including the 2010 Manila Amendments, which set global standards for seafarer safety training.
  • International Recognition:
    Our STCW certification is internationally recognized, allowing candidates to work on yachts, commercial vessels, and cruise liners worldwide. However, candidates should always verify acceptance with their flag state, employer, or relevant authority.
  • Course Validity:
    The STCW BST Certificate is valid for five years, after which refresher training is required to maintain compliance.
