Course Overview

The IYT Master of Yachts Limited 200 Tons certification allows you to operate yachts up to 200 tons and up to 150 nautical miles offshore.

If you do not meet the entry standards, such as being a deckhand, able seaman, or master mariner without practical yacht handling experience, please contact us for alternative pathways.

To obtain your IYT Master of Yachts Limited 200 Tons qualification, you will need to complete the following course components:

  • Theory Course Duration: 
    - A seven-day intensive shore-based course, including assessment papers and final written exams.
    - Pre-course study of 30-40 hours is highly recommended due to the rigorous passing standards.
  • Topics Covered in Theory: 
    - COLREGS
    - Meteorology
    - Navigation
    - Tides
    - Business and Law (Maritime) - can be completed online
  • Practical Course Duration: 
    - A five-day hands-on training conducted aboard our 50-foot Sunseeker Manhattan PEARL. 
    - Candidates will live on board, gaining the necessary skills to become an IYT Master of Yachts.
  • Topics and skills covered in practical  
    - Docking scenarios
    - Maneuvering with one engine
    - Approach a mooring and anchoring
    - Rope work
    - Navigation and practical passage planning
    - General practical seamanship
  • Final Exam: 
    - On practical day 6, an external IYT Master of Yachts examiner will conduct a comprehensive oral and practical test on board the training yacht.

 

To enroll in the IYT Master of Yachts Limited course, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Sea Time: 
    - Logged 50 days at sea (8 consecutive hours per day)
    - 3,000 nautical miles on genuine cruises or passages, with significant vessel handling experience.
    - Candidates must have served in a position of responsibility, at minimum as a watch leader, or as a captain.
  • Night Watch: 
    - At least 30 hours on watch at night as an active crew member. "Night" is defined as the time between sunset and sunrise.
  • Vessel Size: 
    - Sea time must be obtained on a yacht at least 10 meters in length for recreational or commercial charter purposes.
    - Sea time on merchant marine and cargo vessels do not qualify. 
  • Documentation: 
    - Evidence of sea time must clearly state mileage (minimum 3,000 NM), night watch hours (at least 30), and the candidate’s role (e.g., watch leader). 
    - Include the candidate's name, boat name, vessel type, and kind of vessel on each page.
  • Verification: 
    - Yachting experience must be verified in original by the yacht’s captain or the employer. 
    - Candidates who were acting as skipper on their own boat may sign their own entries, but independent verification is required.

Further Documents required:

  • Valid STCW Basic Safety Training qualification, including STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness.
  • VHF SRC certificate (accepted by IYT and MCA).
  • Copy of passport
  • Color passport-sized photo (digital)
  • Valid MCA medical examination (ENG1) signed and stamped by an MCA-approved doctor. An MCA-approved doctor is available in Dubai and another in Abu Dhabi.
  • Critical Information: Please note that MCA/IYT no longer certifies candidates who are color blind—do not disregard this note.
  • Nautical knowledge should correspond to the IYT Master of Yachts Coastal level or similar. Candidates must hold at least an IYT International Bareboat Skipper license or equivalent.
  • A high-level theory pre-test is required before course admission.
