The Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport (Federal Transport Authority = FTA) was established in accordance with Federal Law No. 1 of 2006 as a federal entity with an independent corporate personality and budget, as per Cabinet Resolution No. 52 of 2006.

In 2021, the authority was renamed the Federal Maritime Authority of the U.A.E. (FMA) and now operates as a service department under the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI) of the U.A.E..

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) was renamed to the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA) in 2023. The Dubai Maritime Authority is now affiliated with the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC).
