Course Overview

Enhance or start your maritime career with the STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FP&FF) course.

This essential training is a core module of the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course. STCW FP&FF (STCW Code A-VI/1-2) provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to prevent, respond to and fight fires on board, helping to protect both crew and vessel.

The FP&FF course module is part of the mandatory STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), which also includes:

  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) – STCW Code A-VI/1-1
  • STCW Elementary First Aid (EFA) – STCW Code A-VI/1-3
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) – STCW Code A-VI/1-4

Additional STCW Security Training:

  • STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) – STCW Code A-VI/6-1

If you already hold an STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting certificate, the training required will depend on the validity and issuing Administration of your existing certificate. Holders of certificates issued by other maritime Administrations may be eligible for STCW Refresher FP&FF training.

The first day consists of classroom theory training covering subjects such as:

  • Shipboard firefighting organization
  • Elements of fire and explosion
  • Fire and smoke detection
  • Types and sources of ignition
  • Actions to be taken onboard a ship
  • Classification of fires

The theory training is followed by a written exam.

The second course day consists of practical firefighting training conducted by licensed and certified firefighting professionals. Candidates will practise fighting and extinguishing actual fires using firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment.

Practical learning objectives include:

  • Use various types of fire extinguishers
  • Use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • Extinguish small and larger fires
  • Fight fires in smoke-filled enclosed spaces while wearing SCBA
  • Extinguish fires in rooms with fire and heavy smoke
  • Extinguish oil fire

The total course duration is two days.

Return transport from our Dubai office to the practical firefighting training facility is organised by Marine Concept and included in the course fee

What's included in the price:

  • Water
  • Coffee and tea during theory sessions
  • Lunch on the second practical training day
  • Return bus transfer from our office in Dubai to the external practical location for Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF)
  • STCW BST Certificates of Proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF) upon successful completion
  • Use of the required safety and training equipment, including SCBA and fire extinguishers, during practical exercises

Entry Requirements: 

  • Physical Fitness: 
    Candidates must be capable of rigorous physical activity during practical sessions, including firefighting drills that involve high temperatures, darkened enclosed spaces and physical exertion.
  • Medical or Health Declaration: 
    A valid medical certificate or completed health declaration is required to confirm fitness to participate in the practical training.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: 
    Candidates must be at least 16 years old to enroll.
  • ID or Passport: 
    A valid form of identification (ID or passport) is required for registration and certification purposes.

Our Certification:

  • STCW Certificates of Proficiency: 
    After successful completion, candidates receive both a hard copy and a digital copy of the STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF).
  • MOEI/FMA Accreditation: 
    Our training institute is fully accredited by the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure (MOEI) and the Federal Maritime Authority (FMA) of the U.A.E., ensuring compliance with the highest maritime training standards.
  • Compliance with STCW 78, as amended: 
    Our Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF) course is conducted in accordance with the applicable requirements of the STCW Convention and Code, as amended, including STCW Code A-VI/1-2.
  • International Recognition: 
    STCW is the internationally recognized standard for seafarer training and certification. Our U.A.E.-issued STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF) Certificate of Proficiency supports candidates working on yachts, commercial vessels and cruise liners worldwide. Candidates should always verify acceptance and any additional requirements with their flag State, employer or relevant maritime authority.
  • Course Validity: 
    The STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FP&FF) Certificate of Proficiency is valid for five years in accordance with U.A.E. maritime legislation, after which the full course must normally be completed again to maintain compliance.

Course Dates

STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FP&FF) is a core module (A-VI/1-2) included in the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) week. 

The FP&FF module can also be booked individually, subject to availability within a scheduled STCW BST course.
